Julian Legg Architecture

Situated on a picturesque rural site in Mahurangi, NewZealand, this dwelling is designed as a retreat, offering an opportunity to reconnect with nature. Positioned atop a vegetated embankment overlooking a rolling rural landscape, the cabin fosters solitude and introspection. Deeply recessed openings frame bifold shutters, allowing occupants to manually control the apertures and regulate light and ventilation. An enclosed deck functions as an additional outdoor living space, linking the sleeping quarters with the kitchen and living area. Clad in dark-stained timber, the structure is intentionally ambiguous, drawing inspiration from the traditional New Zealand mai mais—duck-hunting shelters commonly found in the surrounding landscape.
